Thank you to everyone who donated to our Indonesian Earthquake Appeal.

So far, Ozbabybargain has donated $1000 to the Lombok Earthquakes ( $500 on 18 Aug and another $500 on 31 Aug 2018 )

The funds have supported the Indonesian Red Cross team – including 420 staff and volunteers – to provide critical aid including tarpaulins and shelter materials, blankets, clean drinking water, health care and referrals, hygiene kits and psychosocial support. Emergency teams also continue to reach remote villages in mountainous areas that have been isolated since the disaster.

Since the first earthquake struck in July, the people of Lombok have experienced five major earthquakes and 1,500 aftershocks. The destruction is staggering. More than 550 people have died, more than 7,700 are injured and around 400,000 people have been displaced. 75 percent of buildings near the epicentre have been damaged or demolished, including 577 school buildings.

While the damage has been devastating, the people are resilient and determined.

Entrepreneurs across the island, like Suliko, are restarting and creating new businesses in front of demolished storefronts. Residents are determined to recover and to provide for their families.

“We are tired but have to stay strong,” Suliko says with determination. “We are strong,” she emphasizes.

Now more than ever, community gathering spaces are important to help people gather information, lean on each other and return to a sense of normalcy.

Azhar lives in Dangiang on Lombok. “We’ve been here for over 40 years and raise our children across the street from my sister and her family,” he says of the place he used to call home, now demolished. Walking through what was their living room, a television, a book from the shelf, remain in the rubble.

Now he stands in front of the temporary shelter he built with help from the Red Cross. “We are strong,” he says.

The school down the street from Azhar where his daughters go is damaged and classes have been disrupted. “They find a way to play and keeping learning here,” he says.

Red Cross staff and volunteers in Indonesia will continue to support the people of Lombok as they rebuild their homes and lives. Thank you again for helping them :)
