Make a toy donation - The Smith Family

Posted by Angela Daud on November 04, 2013 (0 Comments)

Christmas is a special time for families and giving, but sadly many children living in financial disadvantage will not receive a gift this Christmas.

The Smith Family's Toy & Book Appeal is your opportunity to help bring a smile to a disadvantaged child's face this Christmas.

The Smith Family has a long and proud association with Christmas. The organisation was founded in 1922 when five businessmen decided to deliver toys to orphans on Christmas Eve. This year, with your help, The Smith Family aims to deliver more than 43,500 new toys and 29,000 new books to children in need around Australia.

This gesture of goodwill ensures that all Australian families can come together at Christmas to share gifts and celebrate life. The Smith Family continues to provide opportunities for disadvantaged Australians to participate fully in society and we believe that Christmas is a time when all Australians should feel they belong, regardless of circumstances.

For the month of Dec and Jan, Ozbabybargain is going to donate 1% of sales to Make a Toy Donation - The Smith Family. Hope to bring alot of smiles to all kids in Australia this Christmas 2013.

Collected $208.88 and will go to The Smith Family back to school instead.

 http://www.abc.net.au/news/2011-11-11/life-at-a-cambodian-rubbish-dump/3659920

A friend sent this article to me and my husband recently re: Life in a Cambodian rubbish dump.  Our hearts are breaking after we read the article and saw all the photos. Like the writer said what he saw was "from another world", but that the people are happy.

With 34 per cent of the total population in Cambodia living on less than $1 a day, those in the dumps, at least they can find food and shelter. They earn about 35 cents per day for 14 hours' work. They are nomads. They move from dump to dump when the one they're at is full, normally every four years or so. Their whole life they are living in the dumps; they just move from one to another.

They are normal people. Most of the little children are aged between three and 15 and they are always smiling - that was what shocked the most. As quoted in the article : One day a little boy carrying a bag of blood asked me why the people in my country never smile. I didn’t know what to answer. While he looked at the blood he was carrying as a treasure to eat, he explained to me 'I smile all the time, I’m lucky. Today I’m going to eat this and tomorrow I will see the sun again'.

It is true isn't it .. when you have everything you tend to take things for granted and hard to feel contented. Whereas when you have nothing a small little thing like one banana found in the rubbish dump make the people/kids there feel very lucky!

Blessed are those who have contented hearts.

For the month of Jun and Jul, Ozbabybargain is going to give 1Percent of sales to Cambodia Children - UK registered charity, set up to help some of Cambodia’s poorest children and give them the means for a healthy and happy future.

The money collected will be reported in the website and Facebook at the end of Jul.

Be blessed and be a blessing to others in need.

Ozbabybargain is going to donate $288.83 from Apr and May sales to Project Sahyog.
In the Hindi language, "Sahyog" means "Support". Project Sahyog is a new initiative of the Indian Charity Trust, Restore India. The project aims to support women by providing employment for them.
Women are often the people who are most motivated to see change happen in the family, and empowering them with new skills can be the most effective way of helping a family and the community.
Restore India  runs sewing centres in four different communities. A six month course teaches the women to sew clothes for their own family and also brings them to a standard where they can earn some money with a sewing skills.
We are also commencing self-help groups which enable groups of women to start small enterprises, which can earn money. In some cases,  the women use their sewing skills for the self-help groups.
Project Sahyog will launch a sewing enterprise which will initially make school uniforms for our Restore India literacy schools. Once this product line is established, the same uniforms can be offered to other schools in the Delhi area.
41% of the world's poor live in India *. The reality is that people who are in poverty need some form of help to escape the cycle and holistic approach is required to help in many areas of their life. Restore India was formed to serve the poor - we run literacy schools, vocational training programs, goat projects, health and nutrition projects, and  child education adoption schemes. We currently work in ten communities in fives cities across North India.

I would like to share a story behind these amazing products California Baby. I found this product by chance when my 1son had eczema at six weeks. Like Jessica I would like to get products that are safe for my newborn and soft to his pure skin. Like her too once I became a mom I started to reading labels that related to baby products. I love the fact that this product is so natural using 100% natural and organic cleansing ingredients such as organic soapbark, wild harvested yucca and super gentle glucosides that all come from renewable and sustainable vegan sources. These all-natural vegetable cleansers are non-stripping, sulfate-free, synthetic fragrance free, naturally low foaming and readily biodegradable (that’s the term for extremely and completely biodegradable)

Jessica Iclisoy (Founder and President of California Baby) Grew up in southern California, spent much of free time body surfing the Pacific waves and many summers harvesting vegetables at a family farm. In her early 20s, as a top buyer for a French fashion designer in Beverly Hills, she was constantly on the go, hitting the Paris fashion show circuit. When became pregnant with first child, it didn't occur to slow down. Some say she sped up. She started scrutinizing her lifestyle when she became pregnant with her 1st son. She took it farther than most! With a mission to raise her family in an all-natural, non-toxic environment, she initiated what has become an ongoing endeavor to purify body, home, and way of life. She became a vegetarian, eating only locally grown, organic foods purchased from her local farmer’s market. She stocked up on organic cloth diapers for her newborn and devoted herself to breastfeeding. She started gardening and composting. And for the first time in her life, she began scrutinizing labels. Unable to decipher some of the ingredients in the baby shampoo she purchased from a local health food store, she consulted a chemical dictionary at the library and found that many of the cleansing agents and synthetic fragrances listed were not only harsh on the skin, but suspected carcinogens.

This is where the story of California Baby® begins.
Determined to come up with a gentle, safe baby wash, she began cold-calling chemists. For the next few years, her kitchen became the lab. She experimented with organic herbs and plants, essential oils, waxes, and powders until she discovered a key ingredient: Decyl Polyglucose, a gentle, biodegradable cleansing and bubbling agent derived from renewable and biodegradable plant sources. Here was an effective, organic replacement for the damaging cleansers found in the so-called “natural” brands at the time. My blends contained no harsh or harmful ingredients, no synthetics, no common allergens, and no pesticides. Scented solely with aromatherapy quality essential oils to promote baby wellness – a concept she pioneered in the baby products sector – she knew she was onto something good.

By the time second son was born, had turned her kitchen experiments into a thriving business. Introduced in 1995 with a single hit product – Calming Shampoo & Bodywash – California Baby® now encompasses over 50 pediatrician and dermatologist recommended products that span hair care, diaper care, non-chemical suncare, bath fun, wellness, and more. Celebrity moms such as Julia Roberts, Halle Berry, Katie Holmes, and Courtney Cox, to name a few, are fans of the brand, which has earned cult status in such trendy Asian countries as South Korea, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Taiwan.

As a mother of two, completely relate to the anxiety that accompanies the steady stream of toxic and environmental crises in the news -- phthalates in fragrances and sippy cups, arsenic in talcum powder, pharmaceuticals in our water. That is why she've been committed to sustainable business practices from the get-go, using sustainable and biodegradable ingredients and recyclable packaging for our products. Eager to take green to the extreme, California Baby® is converting all aspects of business and manufacturing processes to earth-first, zero waste, solar power and recyclable systems.

She are proud that California Baby® is the only complete natural baby line to make the jump from a niche market to a nationally recognized brand that is sold in top retail stores like Whole Foods, Babies R’ Us and Target. Believe that her mission extends far beyond creating products that are safe for children and healthy for the environment. She and husband strive to educate and enlighten parents to the simple principles of natural living, adhering always to our founding philosophy: what’s good for the environment is good for families.

Swaddle Love

Posted by Angela Daud on December 25, 2012 (1 Comment)

Swaddle Love is an entertaining and practical guide full of candid storytelling and heartwarming humour, that explores the history, science, and techniques of swaddling. It's a joyful celebration of babies, parenthood, and sleeping eight hours a night.

In 2003, pregnant with her first daughter, Raegan Moya-Jones began an unforgettable journey. From Aussie emigrant and anxious mother-to-be, to business entrepreneur, and now author of the quintessential book on swaddling, Raegan's path has been peppered with successes and challenges, laughter and tears, but most of all, it has been traveled with passion.

If you've ever been faced with an inconsolable newborn, you realize the value of swaddling. It seems like magic, but of course makes perfect sense: a baby is held quite snugly in the womb for months, and there is great comfort in returning to that. Raegan Moya-Jones is known for the beautiful blankets everyone wants, and now with Swaddle Love gives us a practical and passionate guide -- not only how to swaddle but also why to swaddle. It's a book that makes a parent's life easier and a baby's more soothing." - Peg Moline, Editor in Chief, Fit Pregnancy

"Swaddle Love helps parents understand the swaddle's vital role in helping young babies feel calm and secure – essential ingredients for getting a good night's rest." Jennifer Waldburger and Jill Spivack, creators of The Sleepeasy Solution

"Mother Goose rhymed about it. Hippocrates taught it to his students. It helped a tiny tot in a Bethlehem manger get his first night of sleep. Even though it's been practiced by countless cultures for thousands of years, swaddling has become a lost art. All that's changing thanks to Raegan Moya-Jones, the Raphael of the swaddling renaissance. Swaddle love illustrates what every parent needs to know: swaddling helps babies sleep soundly and for longer periods of time, and fosters that vital connection between parent and child. For the countless moms and dads who have seen 4:15 a.m. on the bedside clock one too many times, swaddle love - and a half dozen muslin wraps - just might change their lives." Shawn Bean , Senior Editor, Babytalk Magazine
